Vanillekipferl biscuit

This traditional biscuit is a festive staple in Germany and Austria. Our Vanillekipferl biscuits, made from delicious sponge with a fine vanilla flavour, are a sweet sign that Christmas is coming.

They’re also really quick and easy to make – so you have even more time to enjoy the festive season together.


What else you’ll need

  • 150 g soft butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Wheat flour for rolling out
  • Powdered sugar for dusting


Make the dough:

  1. Separate the egg. Put the baking mix, soft butter and egg yolk in a mixing bowl.
  2. Use an electric hand mixer (dough hook) on a medium setting to make into big rough crumbs. Knead by hand into a smooth dough.
  3. 3. Leave the dough to rest in the fridge for around 60 minutes. Cooling the dough for longer makes it easier to work with. If the dough is too hard, give it a quick knead through on a floury surface.

Shape the Vanillekipferl:

  1. Shape the dough into 1 cm thick rolls on a floury surface and cut off pieces 4-5 cm long.
  2. Shape the pieces into crescents and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

Bake and decorate:

  1. Bake the biscuits on the middle shelf of a pre-heated oven. Dust the cooled biscuits with powdered sugar as desired.
