Mini Black and White Cookies

Black and white cookies are a popular childhood favourite. This delicacy is known by a few different names:

  • the cookies have previously been known as ‘half-moons’ or ‘half-and-half cookies’. The cookies made their name in New York City,
  • but are said to have been created by Bavarian immigrants to the USA. In Germany, however, the tasty treats are known as ‘Amerikaner’ (Americans), for reasons which remain lost to history.
  • It’s thought that the biscuits made their way to Germany from the US in the 1950s, and the name may have been inspired by American GI soldiers.

No matter where the name actually comes from, we love black and white cookies! Whether for a birthday party or simply a tasty treat – our mini black and white cookies are the perfect snack for every occasion. What else you’ll need

For the dough:

  • 75 g soft margarine or butter
  • 1 medium egg

For the glaze:

  • 20 ml (approx. 2 tbsp) lukewarm water

Preparation

Make the dough

  1. Preheat a conventional oven to 200 °C (fan approx. 180 °C).
  2. Put the baking mix, margarine or butter and egg in a mixing bowl and mix with an electric hand mixer briefly on the lowest setting at first, then on the highest setting for around 3 minutes, until creamy.

Bake

  1. Use 2 teaspoons to place 14 round dollops of dough (4-5 cm in diameter) on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake the mini black and white cookies on the middle shelf of the preheated oven for around 10 minutes.

Cool and decorate

  1. After baking the cookies, leave to cool for around 10 minutes and then loosen from the baking paper.
  2. Now stir the lemon glaze mixture with lukewarm water and spread onto half the flat side of the still-warm mini cookies.
  3. While the glaze dries, the sachet with the chocolate glaze can be placed in hot boiling water and soak for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Then cut open the sachet of glaze and spread on the half of the mini cookies without glaze. This creates a wonderful black and white effect. Of course, you can also spread each cookie with either lemon or chocolate glaze only.
